Propellerhead Reason 4

The hugely anticipated Reason 4 was announced by (the very secretive) Propellerhead Software … oh boy, this took me by surprise :O. Now that you’ve just read the headline, you might ask yourself “So, what is new?” Here we go …

Page updates:
5 February 2008 - new info about Reason 4.0.1 update
3 Octomber 2007 - update with more info and new videos

- The Polysonic Synthesizer
As you already know Propellerheads presented Thor at 2007 Winter NAMM Show. is a modular synthesizer and sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard before by featuring six different oscillator types and four unique filters.

Mr. James Bernard presets us the :

RPG-8 - Monophonic Arpeggiator
The RPG-8 is a brand new unit dedicated to the art of arpeggiation and has some unique and advanced features too: a pattern section for muting selected notes in an arpeggio, a large display showing values and positions, Single Note Repeat can add sudden bursts of arpeggio etc. Only in you can arpeggiating your breakbeats, your orchestra samples, or your vocals with RPG-8! Very easy to use, yet deceptively powerful, the RPG-8 provides endless creative possibilities for each of Reason’s sound sources.

RPG-8 audio demos:

Although it is very user friendly, the RPG-8 has some very advanced features like the Single Note Repeat. This new function starts the arpeggiator only when two or more simultaneous notes are held down, thus letting you add sudden bursts of arpeggio to your melody lines.

ReGroove Mixer - Real Time Groove Console
This unique tool is great if you want your music to sound less rigid, less programmed. ReGroove Mixer applies its timing magic non-destructively and in realtime, giving you freedom to adjust its settings - and fine-tune your groove - as your music is playing. This unique device will become the favourite tool for many Reason users, since the drums are a very important part of most songs. But this device is not only for drums, the ReGroove Mixer allows you to apply different settings to up to 32 musical elements in your song, for ultimate control like the groove amount, slide and shuffle and other detailed settings. Also in the new Reason soundbank you’ll find a great selection of groove patches, many of them created from analyzed recordings of real musicians as well as classic groovy tracks.

So, who’s Stoni? More: Stony on Myspace, Stoni and PreSonus.

Advanced Sequencer
The new advanced sequencer is a long time request from Reason users. The workflow is hugely improved by the new sequencer that is swifter, stronger and more intuitive than ever.

Watch what are some of the highlights in the new sequencer:

Reason 4 - The Sequencer - Overview Reason 4 - The Sequencer - Edit Mode

The new sequencer was recoded from scratch and brings a whole new look, a ton of fresh features and a completely new way of handling sequencer data. Now every device or instrument now gets its own dedicated track, with separate lanes for note, performance and automation data. New also is the fact that the sequencer data (notes, automation, the works) is now housed in clips, musical building blocks that can be opened, sliced or moved. When a clip is moved to a new location, all its internal data follows right along with it, always ending up exactly where you intended it to. Very nice!

Language flavors
Now, when you install , you can choose between four different language versions: English, French, German or Japanese.

Factory Sound Bank Updated
The Factory Sound Bank contain presets for all devices in . This is expected when new devices are available and the additions are: patches, more patches, including arpeggio-driven patches using the RPG-8 arpeggiator, Groove files for ReGroove, new ReDrum drum patches, Song starters etc. Also, starting in this version, the FSB will contain Signature Patches of world’s leading synthesists and sound developers for .

Tool Window
Ohhh … nice one! This is a floating window containing all your most frequently used tools. Using it, you can create new devices by choosing from a device palette, fine tune your sequencer data from the Tools pane, or set groove parameters using the groove pane.

Reason 4 - The Tools Window

& NN-XT updates
The and NN-XT devices have both had minor revisions to make programming patches easier and more powerful.

The NN-XT has new features to edit multiple samples simultaneously, to chromatically auto-map samples.

The now has a transpose function that transposes notes sent to a device. Long awaited by me and many other reason users that also like to create their own instruments are the additions of more flexible choice of Sources in the programmer and a function to automate the receive notes option, making it possible to switch between instruments in a patch. That’s a very, very nice and welcomed addition!

This page was update with more information, new audio demos and images. Please, feel free to tell us your opinion on the new great features of Reason 4 …

  2. Gravatar Icon 2 magnetik

Why would anyone spend US$ 500 on Reason when you can get much more advanced audio apps like Cubase SE3 for less than half that price? This may please Reason fanboys but ultimately Reason 4 is not very competitive versus apps in the same price range such as Cubase Studio, Logic Express, Live etc. Reason had some advantages (stability, low cpu usage) in the past but these no longer apply to today’s market.

  3. Gravatar Icon 3 andreio

Why? There are lots of reasons … If you already own Cubase, Logic or/and Live then you could see Reason as a complementary application. Think, for $500 you get 10 unique instruments, over 20 effects units and many others, not to mention the thousands of high quality sounds etc. I think there is no other audio product in this rage that offers so much. Also you’ll get the full version, not LE, Express, SE, Lite etc.

Also there is a matter of taste. If you are already pro, you may want something new and fresh, that si stable and come with gazillion of sounds and users generated content. If you are a beginner, you may want something to learn fast, not something that has menus and sub menus for a simple instrument overview. And as you get more experienced you realize that there are many possibilities in Reason 4 that no other audio software can achieve.

The only somewhat of competitor for Reason could be Live 6, but this is for different use. Although Reason moves more and more into the Live territory, while for Live there’s no change to take something from Reason territory.

I think Reason is a powerful tool, not meant to compete with the likes of Cubase, Logic, Sonar or DP, but more to complete these applications …

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 magnetik

I disagree with your comments about value. For $400 Cubase Studio 4 comes with 47 plugins. Logic Express gives you 6 synths and 40 effects plugins for only $300. Also, saying that Reason is the full version and not a “lite” version is meaningless. The difference between the full and lite versions of products like Logic are features such as Dolby surrround sound mixing which the average user isn’t going to need and don’t come with Reason anyway.

If you use Reason to “complete” other sequencers then it’s still not competitive value for money. Reaktor 5 costs $120 less than Reason and will give you 37 plugins to add to your sequencer. Plus, using Reaktor you can build your own synths, effects, step sequencers and so on and download plugins that others have made.

As for Reason offering possibilities that no other software can achieve, that is completely untrue. Fully modular environments like Reaktor and Synthedit give the ultimate in flexibility and creative scope.

  5. Gravatar Icon 5 andreio

OK, you are right in a way that Cubase, Logic or Sonar come with some pre-installed plugins, but can you combine/chain them to create super instruments or super effects just like Combinator does (and I’m referring mainly to the way you can assign multiple functions to one button)? Also does any have something similar to CV system from Reason?

And you are right again that in Reaktor 5 or Synthedit you create something much more complex and different then what Combinator can. But Reaktor or Synthedit is not a DAW or sequencer.

Of course combining Cubase with Reaktor can give you something more powerful than Reason, but it’s also a lot more complex, a lot more time consuming and also more expensive and you’ll still have no CV system and others (such as the Reason Sounds Browser or ReMote etc.)

I’m not saying that Reason is better, I’m saying that Reason is something truly unique that offers features from both worlds and some more.

  6. Gravatar Icon 6 Iondot

    magnetik,

Your arguments make little sense to me. You suggest that Reason is not a good value - that Logic Express gives you the same ability, but then abruptly suggest Reaktor and Synthedit would also be required to match Reasons possibilities which suddenly means hundreds of additional dollars.

Reason provides a great and unique set of tools that ARE unparalleled and it does so more economically than other products.

I personally have found Cubase an awkward tool, one that slows my process.

  7. Gravatar Icon 7 magnetik

No, I never suggested that you need Reaktor to make Logic or Cubase match Reason, far from it. Logic Express / Cubase Studio 4 are already more than a match for Reason, in fact they far surpass it.

I only mentioned Reaktor to point out that any claim about Reason having more possibilities than any other software is just pain untrue, and that if you’re buying Reason as a cheap way to add lots of plugins to another sequencer then Reaktor is more cost effective and flexible.

As for economy, yes Reason requires cpu than other sequencers. That may have been an advantage a few years ago but these days you can buy a super fast dual-core machine for a pittance. Reason’s past advantages (such as light cpu usage, stability) no longer apply to today’s market.

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 Iondot

    magnetik,

I think you might need to go back and read your post again.

What synth’s and samplers are provided with Logic/Cubase?

As for the “pittance”, well, apparently you are either wealthy or have very low expectations for your hardware.

And, again, Reason provides a better user experience for me, period, which is invaluable.

  9. Gravatar Icon 9 magnetik

Bundled plugins are show on the respective websites:

    http://www.apple.com/logicexpress/specs.html
    http://www.steinberg.net/1018M52087573ab0.html
    http://www.steinberg.net/1017M52087573ab0.html

And if those aren’t to your liking there are tons of VSTs that you can get either free or for as little as $10. Take a look at KarmaFX for example (http://www.karmafx.net)

You can buy a dual core HP machine for $450. That’s less than the cost of a copy of Reason.

User experience is subjective. Most producers I know who use more than one sequencer find Reason cumbersome.

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 Iondot

The links you sent to suggest the provided synths and samplers are weaker and less varied than Reasons.

Yes, you CAN buy a dual core HP box for $450, but the cost is neither a pittance and the machine will be sub par.

And surely someone who can find a dual core HP box for $450, would know that you can purchase reason almost ANYWHERE for $399.

User experience is subjective. So is anecdotal evidence - most musicians I know who use more than one sequencer find Reason a delight.

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 magnetik

Well as I said, if you don’t like the bundled synths you can install others either free or extremely cheaply. For example:

    http://gersic.com/plugins/index.php?daCat=-6
    http://free-plugin-list.com/?mode=cat&show_cat=1

Those two sites show just a few of literally hundreds of free quality plugins.

Cubase runs comfortably on my 3 year old AMD 2700 machine. A $450 core2duo HP box is an absolute dream machine by comparison, hardly “sub-par”.

I’ve been hearing all these arguments about Reason for years, and I’m lucky enough to be able to afford any music software out there. In fact, I have Cubase, I have Logic Pro, I have Live 6, I have Digital Performer. I have Reaktor, Absynth, Kontakt.

And what do I keep coming back to, again and again?

    Reason.

Sure, it’s not perfect. Do I get frustrated I can’t use my favorite plug-ins on it? Sure. Would I like a better sequencer sometimes? Sure.

But if I just want to get all the crap out of the way and just worry about writing music, there is nothing better, period. if you go down the list and break things down into individual pieces, sure, you can pick apart Reason. But nothing else puts the whole package together better; nothing else is the *musical instrument* that Reason is.

And maybe if you’re one of the very few who can afford to do music full-time, you can afford to spend time on the ridiculous learning curves of Logic or Reaktor. But a huge practical advantage of Reason for many people who want to do music in their precious spare time is that the learning curve is much less painful. That may not mean much to the full-time “pro,” but it means a lot to everyone else.

Can acappellas be loaded into Reason like you can in Cubase and chopped up and rearranged ?

I fully agree with this vision, and its’ right about what Reason (3.0) as a matter of fact is.
Although I use Logic Audio as my main sequenser, I use Reason as a fast working ‘music-arranging’ tool.
I poor Reason sounds track per track in WAV, eventually replacing instruments by VST’s in my Logic and finally mix there.
I think the best way to deal with Reason is to see it as an additional tool besides your main DAW.
The only things I miss in Reason is the possibility to record audio and a Logic like event-list editor.
Is this the case with 4.0 ? (didnt check out yet) Personally, I think 399€ would be a better price…

I read an article once that put it in perspective. Reason is like a Snickers bar. Yes, it satisfies, but in the end they are empty calories. Reason is not a DAW. Comparing it to Cubase, Live, etc. is an apples-oranges affair.

There are those that will argue. Fine. Argue. Then try to record some live audio into Reason. Oh.. can’t? Hmm.

Not a DAW. Nice eye-candy (ooh.. the wires jiggle.. ), some interesting sounds, but not a DAW.

    Let the Holy Wars begin.

Mentioning Logic and getting a cheap HP machine is ilogical. You have to have a MAC to run logic now since Apple bought Emagic. So, coming from someone who also can have anything they want as far as softwares and hardwares go Reason in my most unbiased opinion is simply amazing. I am a musician and the speed of getting an idea out of my head and onto a media it’s unsurpassed. I Stand by reason and I can’t wait for the new version. I have put many a track on vinyl using it totally by itself. I do my vocals in Melodyne and throw it all into reason afterwards. Really it’s irrelevant what you use as long as you know how to use it. You can have all the plug-ins you like and still not know what to do with them. Plus it’s about it’s ease of use. For those of us that came from the gear days it’s familiar and shortens the learning curve. The idea of the entire software being self contained is key. So, I’m not impressed by your plug-ins and DAW(gs). Did I mention ease of use? ;)

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 magnetik

I’d love to know why Reason users think it’s any easier or quicker to get an idea down in Reason than a proper DAW like Logic.

  18. Gravatar Icon 18 Michael

    Ha, great discussion this is!

    Logic = intelligent
    Reason = smart

    Logic = cluttered
    Reason = 1 rack

VST Synthogy Ivory = engineered pianos
    Refill Pianos = producer pianos

VST GPO = kontakt - player grrr
Refill GPO = instant Combi’s, solo / section switching

It’s all good! It’s about the “workflow” … that works for you :-)

But hey, logic 8 will be the best DAW ever….. maybe we will know on the 5th sept? Still need notation view…..

Apple = No communication to Pro users; even Garageband users are served first this year
Propellerhead = online countdown to next big update

come on guys are you all forgetting the reason why you use all these programs ?we are in it to make music and music is the most powerful thing it beats all these programs hands down no matter what you use its coming up with the ideas that matter as long as you can get them down you can have all the synths and software in the world but its the final cut that counts and i think reason is a simple program that cuts all the bull s$^%t out and just lets you get on with the music

DONT BE A GEEK AND DONT FORGET ABOUT THE MUSIC

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 magnetik

So Logic 8 Pro has just been released. And a copy of the full version is now the same RRP as Reason - US$500. To me that really shows that Props aren’t in touch with the state of the market. Reason should be around the $200 mark to be competitive.

  21. Gravatar Icon 21 proceed

If you know how to use your programs then all mentioned are good, some do certain things better than others, and some parts of the writing process are more easily done in one program vs another (at least for me). I use Logic as my main platform ,initially get ideas down in Reason(as well as crazy chaining to get surprise results), use Ableton Live for performance, and other softsynths such as Absyth and Minimonsta for the type of soundscapes they offer–all argumenents about one vs another blah blah blah are whack, or should I say where can I buy your album?

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 Iondot

It is certainly true that different people have different learning styles, so it stands to reason (no pun) that different products will appeal. For a given individual, it makes sense that Reason or Logic would represent a better value. This is why speaking in such derisive generalities is pointless and borderline insulting.

Interesting that it also seems to have derailed any real discussion of Reason 4, which, in theory, is the point of this thread.

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 proceed

The new additions to Reason sound outstanding, and definitely help make Reason a more appealling platform (Can’t wait for the Regroove Mixer-talk about getting grooves out fast!). To me the most appealing features of Reason is how fast and intuitive the writing process is. For me this is probably because it functions and looks like vintage gear,(without wiring headaches) My main concerns with Reason 3 have been centered around the sound– it seems to me that you have to really process sounds within Reason to get things “punched up ” , and I have questions about the mixer–it seems to affect the clarity and dynamics of the sound inputted. I prefer to route things straight out to Logic. Is it true that the algorithims used for sound processing in Reason are not as “good” as those in Logic for example?(or am I imagining this) -any comments? Maybe this is improved upon under the hood of Reason 4. I do think that Propellereheads are going to have to seriously consider dropping the price of Reason(along with just about every other workstation producer) considering what Apple has just done though with their pricing of Logic Studio ( A very calculated move on their part to corner the DAW market–and probably more importantly sell more Mac’s)

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 M. Progression

This has been a very interesting thread to say the least. To get right to the point, I have been using Reason for about 4 years now and have self-taught myself how to use this program as a complete music production tool. If I need vocals I would record dubs from a microphone setup or dub something out on the tables, use recycle and have my vocals in Reason itself, that way for me, it was easier to create whole tracks in Reason, which is much different that using all this different VST’s with cubase. I think Reason 4.0 has began to really look at sound production management in a whole new light, meaning that “Thor” can be used to really work on your sounds and really create exactly what you are looking for… The end result is to get something that mimics “your sound” and that is what your music should be about. I use reason because I just decided to go with one, learn it and keep working on my sound in the process. I could have bought another one of these programs and came up with the same thing “my sound.” A very successful producer once said “When you go with a program, stick with the program, learn the program and create your sound, if you don’t like it or you are not impressed with what you hear, maybe that program is not for you.” I did that and Reason just happened to work for me and I was able to do what I needed to do in order to get things done. I’m looking foward to Reason 4.0 and the new device “Thor”, it will help me take “my sound” to a different, more creative level and hopefully that will reflect in my trax. What I am really curious about is the sample refill packs that will come out for Thor….It’s very key to get good sampling refills for reason and there are a lot of them out there..zero gravity, masterloops, reason refills etc. etc. So hopefully there will be quality sample refills for all genres of music…And mose especially for me Drum n’ Bass.

    Peace

I’ve been producing Electronic music for about 6 years now. I’ve used Cubase, Live, FL Studio, and my fare share of VST Plug-Ins. I would have to say that out of all these programs, the user friendliest, the quickest, and the only one that I’ve really enjoyed working with is:……..nothing less than Reason! Music making is like creative writing, you have to catch the ideas right away and put them down so you can remember them when your mood strikes. I can only do that with Reason. Some people complaint about quality of sound, not able to record live audio into it, can’t use plug-Ins with it. The truth is, Reason was made for everybody, but specially for those who don’t have any instruments or other expensive equipment. Reason in itself is an instrument. It’s easy to get into it, but can also be very complex and in-Depth if that’s what you want. Quality of sound comes only when you put effort into your music, Reason may sound very flat with its default settings and sounds, but it can be rich and beautiful after tweaking its delays, reverbs, compressors, and modulation. After all that’s what music is all about, experimenting, tweaking and finding your own sound, that’s why the Combinator is a beautiful thing. Recording audio into Reason is not possible directly, but you can use Recycle and then load the files into Dr Rex. You can also use your wav files and run them through Melodyne and then load them into the NN19 Sampler. If Vst Plug-ins are your thing then, you can always use the Rewire function with your favorite DAW and plugin away. After you’re done with a track you can aslo export it to wav and use your favorite DAW or something like Adobe Audition (used to be Cool Edit pro), SoundForge, Wave Lab and import your song and use any VST plug-ins your heart desires. I am buying Reason 4 today. I don’t care about the price. The power of “Thor” compels you! It will be worth every penny of my hard earned money. Reason Kicks assssssssssssss!!!

I like this app, the price is agreeable when YOU SELL only! So what about the mess of busses and VSTi to activate or sorta what-the-f**-canNOT-find Steinberg issue? R E A S O N rule…
OK, it’s still a bitty lonely DAW, needs a lot of mastering correcting section, but IMHO it’s the best ekectronic scratch pad all over the world.

I mean: ol’skool trackers were the 1ST Gen. of audio apps, then the pace was done by Propellerheads Rebirth.
The market section was developed to catch this REASON: the only minus is that it’s too closed with no VSTfx
    inserts :)

I DUNNO, I DIDN’T READ EVERYBODIES COMMENTS, BUT AS CONCERNED AS EVERYBODY IS ABOUT WHICH PROGRAM IS BETTER WHY DON’T YOU JUST USE REWIRE AND RUN REASON AND CUBASE TOGETHER. I KNOW ALL YOU GUYS KNOW ABOUT THAT. I MEAN I’VE BEEN WORKIN’ WITH REASON JUST A COUPLE OF YEARS MAKING RAP BEATS AND IF I WANT SOMETHING ELSE GOIN’ ON THAT I CAN’T DO ON REASON (WHICH RARELY OCCURS) I JUST DO IT ON MY TRITON THROUGH CUBASE OR WHATEVER! I MEAN WHEN YOU REALLY BREAK IT DOWN IF YOUR A GOOD PRODUCER YOU’LL MAKE GOOD MUSIC …

  30. Gravatar Icon 30 Pretty Kidz

Most musicians use two programs when creating music. One for quickly getting ideas down and the other for getting to some serious business. Reason is good for quickly getting ideas down but you cannot get down to serious business for several reasons, 1. you cannot record into it as it is not a DAW, 2. The sequencer is not powerful enough to get down to serious business and 3. It does not use VSTs. Therefore almost no successful musician uses Reason alone unless their productions are mainly sample based. They usually ReWire it with Cubase SX. Cubase and Reason make a great combination. Cubase & Ableton’s Live make a great combination. There has not yet been a single program that combines powerful music creation as well as ease of getting ideas down quickly. If you know of one, do let me know. Reason by itself doesn’t cut it. I bought Reason and they still kept the same lame mixer, still cant use VSTs and still cant record into it. I have PC so Cubase SX Rewired to Reason is the best choice for me because I like that Reason gets ideas quickly, so I Rewire to Cubase to get down to business.

To be honest ALL DAWs and music creation softwares have their pros and cons so this argument will go on until the end of time because it comes down to personal preference. If I had a MAC I’d be using Logic. I really like that program. Some are better for getting ideas, and some are better for getting down to serious business so two programs are usually needed to compliment each other. Just use what you prefer, make music and be happy.

  31. Gravatar Icon 31 magnetik

You know, I keep hearing Reason users claim “it’s easier to get ideas down in Reason than a complex program like Logic”. And yet nobody has ever given me a valid explanation about why they think that’s true. Personally I think it’s a load of rubbish perpetuated by people who don’t have a clue about how quickly and easily you can get ideas down in Logic.

  32. Gravatar Icon 32 Boris

For me it’s all about sound quality, about getting stuff sounding good in the mix, getting my bass in your face and my drums in your belly and ears.

I don’t give a fuck about what other people think about this software and this other.

You need to use what you’ve got. I like Reason because it’s a powerful composition tool and you can rack up many instruments and create a good mix. Of course, it is not a complete program - it’s a synth, a drum machine, and a sampler - and you have other options to complement this.

That’s why you have Logic, Cubase, ProTools - these are meant to be Workstations on which you record audio, load your tracks and do final production. They can be composition tools, but then why do so many people ReWire Reason into them? ALL of the people who use Reason (Beastie Boys, Prodigy, etc.) create their tracks in Reason and load them into ProTools for final production.

If you complain that Reason is a bad program because it is not a “complete” program, or if you complain because the factory sounds that come with it sound like a freaking casio keyboard, then all I can say is that you are too LAZY to find out what a tool’s potential is. You probably want to unpack the thing and have it make the music for you. The truth of the matter is that no software will make you sound like a pro, and if you rely on the sounds that came with the software, you will sound like the software. Why do so many professional producers and musicians use Reason? They have tons of money and they can buy ANYTHING…

Come on people, are you fucking serious with this stupid conversation? Let’s listen to some of your tracks and see if they’re any good. Real musicians wouldn’t even be whining about reason vs. logic vs. cubase… this whole deal sounds like “my dick is bigger than yours”.

    Get a fucking life!

Oh please, what a load of crap. That’s like saying people who are into IT don’t compare Windows vs UNIX, or real photographers wouldn’t care about the differences between Adobe Photoshop and Corel Paint Shop. Or, for that matter, that professional builders will use any old drills, hammers and saws. Bullshit! If you really care about what you are creating then you will take an interest in the tools available for your craft.

Why don’t you write to the editors of all the music magazines and tell them to “get a fucking life” and stop comparing different music programs?

I notice you’re yet another person claiming “Reason is a composition tool, Logic isn’t” while completely failing to give any real examples to back that up. :-/

    Magnetik,

Your foul language, poor grammar, and hostile attitude undermine anything you have to say. I don’t agree with Boris, but I can’t agree with you.

I have been using reason for 3 years now. I start off using cakewalk and various plug ins, I was even using sound forge to make synth sounds and then using a sampler to play them. It was horrible, the music I was making sounded like crap. I herd of cubase tried it out. Cubase to me seems like an over hyped, corporate bs program. Every were I go I see CUBASE 4.x or whatever. Man I used cubase before ableton, the program sucks. Plain and simple. Half the vst’s out there are junk too. The only ones worth anything are the ones you pay for. And thoes them self can be more expensive then the DAW or Reason. (eg. Waves is a great VST tho).

I have also found DAW’s like ableton, and cubase to be rather choppy with synths and what not. They tend to use alot of resources. Mainly because your running like 10-20 different programs made from different companies that all have different requirements. When alternatively you could use 2 maybe 3 in my case.

Reason 4. For the music, Ableton for recording if necessary (rewire) and Waves for mastering (honestly waves is the best IMO).

The quality of the stuff I have been doing, well lets just say that there is a new show coming out were the music I made for it is going to be blasted all over the world. (BIZ KID$) check it out.

But that stuff doesn’t matter. I know a kid who is still using Impulse Tracker (talk about complicated) and he makes some really killer sounding stuff.

The main thing is find what you like, DON’T hate others for using something you can’t figure out or think is stupid, and just produce!

I think Reason 4 is awesome, however their was a polysonic synthizer out way before reason4, however thor is much better than the vst ever was. I believe it was released by NI I can’t remember what it’s called but it’s pretty cool.

Reason will always, be my weapon of choice when it comes to music, the others just fill in for things that they can add to it. Reason rocks, plain simple truth, deal with it.

    Peace.

I realize I’m late to comment, but I just wanted to mention that it really doesn’t matter what you use, at all, especially if its just a hobby. I have a friend who’s been a musician for 12 years, and he makes some sweet tracks using hammerhead and audacity along with a guitar and delay pedal. Find a sound that makes you happy, and then go with it. One of my favorite artists produced his first few albums with an 8-track cassette player and a Roland SP-202 (Dr. Sample). Maybe I’m weird for being into lo-fi though.

I also want to say that I use reason with a Novation ReMOTE SL, and I don’t even need to listen to anyone elses music, because I can keep myself entertained just making my own, and I’ll never need another tool to do so. In my opinion that’s what Reason is all about.

I think sully sums it all up. Besides, why do you care what other people want to use to make music? Can’t people just play?
